Welcometo The Rising Sun, Sheffield
A warm welcome from Garry & The Rising Sun Team
The winner of the 2022 Sheffield & District CAMRA Pub of the Year Award and 2023 Sheffield & District CAMRA Pub of the Year Sheffield West, The Rising Sun is a community pub and dining room based in the leafy Sheffield suburb of Fulwood. We have been operated by Abbeydale Brewery since 2005, and always feature a wide range of their beers on our bar as well as a number of rotating guest specials across both cask and keg. In addition, we have an ever-changing cider selection, a carefully curated wine list, a large range of quality spirits and plenty of non-alcoholic options too.
Our large beer garden is perfect for drinks in the sunshine - with covered, heated areas for rainier days too! The pub is also both child friendly and dog friendly.
We have a creative, seasonal food menu that showcases the best of British produce and sees us working with a whole host of local suppliers. Online reservations are recommended for those who wish to dine with us and our menu can be viewed here.
We look forward to welcoming you!
We’re now employee owned! Introducing Sheffield Beerworks EOT Ltd
HUGE NEWS! We’re incredibly excited to announce that the Rising Sun, along with Abbeydale Brewery, is changing hands… and the new owners are all of the staff who make up Team Abbeydale! We’ve always been people powered at heart. But now that’s a legal reality, and entrenched into the very core of our existence as we become an Employee Ownership Trust (an EOT).
As business founders Pat and Sue look towards ensuring their legacy, we’re thrilled to announce they’ve decided that the best long-term custodians for the business are all of us, who’ve helped them to build it, together. Both the pub and brewery will now come under the new umbrella of Sheffield Beerworks EOT Ltd.
There’s no selling out to the big boys here – just a thriving community pub and independent brewery, renewing our commitment to independence through business succession and strengthening the legacy we’ve already worked so hard to build.
To help us celebrate, look out for our special beer, Trust, which we’ll be launching right here on Monday 14th October. You can find out more about the beer, and about the EOT as a whole, over on the brewery’s website here.
Thank you to everyone who’s supported us thus far. We do hope you’ll come with us on the next exciting stage of our journey.
Our History a long-standing part of the community
A pub has been sited here since the 19th century, with its first appearance being in the 1859 General Directory of Sheffield. The name is said to have been chosen for pubs facing east and receiving the early-morning sun, which the original building did. The current pub opened when the then owners, the Sheffield Town Trustees, agreed to provide land for the widening of Fulwood Road free of charge to Sheffield Corporation in return for the demolition and reconstruction of the original pub - which the widened road (to fit electric tram lines in the early twentieth century) was built right through the middle of! Scroll down to see a photo of the original pub, with a much more familiar looking Rising Sun in the process of being built almost at a right angle to it!
The existing building opened in July 1904, operated by the Sheffield Public House Trust Company and with J. Rowbotham as the first manager (Warr, P. (2009), The Growth of Ranmoor, Hangingwater and Nether Green).
Mid-century, the license was taken over by the Courage group – and fun fact: until the 1950s, the car park behind the pub was a bowling green!
In July 1992, the University of Sheffield Students’ Union took over the pub, with Abbeydale Brewery taking ownership just in time for Christmas 2005!
An extensive refurbishment took place in 2014, with the addition of a full kitchen and a feature glass-roofed extension creating the wonderful, welcoming and spacious venue we have today.
